What Does Fitzpatrick Mean for the Texans?

Ryan Fitzpatrick received a phone call from Head Coach Bill O'Brien, set up a visit on Thursday and by the end of the day inked a two-year deal with the Houston Texans.

"I just see it as a great fit for me on the football field, the way that he (O'Brien) thinks about the game, that was a really impressive thing that when we sat down and met that I felt like I really meshed well with."

The terms of his deal is $7.5 million over two years with $4 million guaranteed, and with a deal like that he will be on the 53 man roster when the season opens.

Fitzpatrick is instantly an "O'Brien" quarterback and was hand chosen by the Head Coach to be here to help with the transition period to a younger quarterback. Considered a smart quarterback that understands the game, Fitzpatrick has zero ego and will be a mentor for whoever comes in. His success in the NFL has been average, but he is not coming here to be the starter and his contract reflects that.

It also puts fellow quarterbacks T.J. Yates and Case Keenum on notice here in Houston, because at this point Fitzpatrick will be at worst case scenario, the backup quarterback. Yates and Keenum's future with the team instantly become uncertain with the Texans and it could lead the way for one or both exits from Houston. The guaranteed money given to Fitzpatrick shows how important it was to get him on the roster.

This signing will also move the pieces to officially end the Matt Schaub era in either a trade or outright release. Schaub's current contract does not allow him to be a backup quarterback, so the clock is ticking on what will be the end result.

O'Brien with one signing of a quarterback signals what he feels on the current quarterback situation and that Fitzpatrick is the best option moving forward.

In the scheme of what the Texans are going to be in the near future, this is an important piece for the team. O'Brien is putting his mark on this team and it looks like he has gotten his backup quarterback in place. Fitzpatrick is the start of what looks like to be a complete facelift for the Texans quarterback position.
