Instant Reaction: Texans vs. Falcons

Quick hitters from the Falcons and Texans preseason game

-The Texans still sat out 12 players tonight and put together a solid showing on the field. Despite the lack of players, the Texans for the first time in pre season history scored on special teams, offense and defense.

-Jadeveon Clowney changed the game in a hurry for the Texans with a huge hit on Antone Smith and a quarterback sack on Matt Ryan the following play. Clowney made this happen without J.J. Watt on the field which shows Clowney's game changing ability.

-Johnathan Grimes and Alfred Blue carried the running game early and had their way on the ground with a combined 15 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown. Both look like adequate running backs for the upcoming season. Blue provided some power running while Grimes was good running and receiving the ball which was a good look for a running back group that needs all hands on deck.

-Kendrick Lewis was very active for the defense with a pass breakup and a some physical play from the secondary. Encouraging, especially with slow start he had last week. Lewis is considered the leader of the secondary and this was a good showing for the free safety.

-Ryan Fitzpatrick looked solid in the first half of work for the Texans. The most impressive work was when he took over with a little more than a minute at the end of the first half and led the Texans to a touchdown pass to DeVier Posey. He went 5 of 6 for 64 yards and a touchdown on that final drive of the half. Fitzpatrick biggest asset of the night was his ability to keep plays alive outside of the pocket and rushing for two key first downs. Fitzpatrick brought back some confidence to the offense that was not present last week.

-The Texans continued their sloppy play in regards to penalties during the game. 15 penalties for 117 yards.

-Anthony Denham had the play of the night. He blocked a punt in the 4th quarter then came back and had the key block to let Jonathan Grimes score after he picked up the punt on the ground.

- The Texans as group look much more focused as a group and really had a good showing on special teams with a blocked punt and field goal. Throw in the fact the coverage game was better than previous seasons and they tackled well in open field. It was a good showing for the special teams unit tonight. The coaching of the special teams unit is evident and it's success on the field showed today.
