The Texans pulled off a much needed win on Sunday against a
formidable opponent. Respectively, the Jags had some key players out on defense
but the same has happened to the Texans and is no excuse for losing.
Some might argue that the Texans got lucky or that it was
an aberration they won against a playoff bound team, but I call it execution and
good coaching. Coach Kubiak
was on top of his coaching game and so were the players. Wong, Faggins and Peek
were back in a starting role having recovered from injuries and made a huge
impact on the defensive unit as a whole.
The defense allowed only 7 points, 220 total net yards, and
a sack in four quarters of football against a team that shut out the New York Jets by a score of 41-0 the previous week. The Texans offense totaled 349 total
net yards and only allowed one sack on QB David Carr on the day. By all accounts
this was just an “old fashioned butt whoopin”.
The Texans seemed to have all their ducks in a row
capitalizing off of two turnovers and turning them into points. The game was
controlled at the line of scrimmage by the Texans allowing only 102 yards
rushing from the Jags and the Texans offense put up 131 yards on the ground.
This addition of a running game came just in time against one of the top
defenses in the NFL and allowed the Texans passing game to open up. WR Andre Johnson had another 100+ yard game for the fourth time this season seemingly on
his way to another pro-bowl year.
The Texans dominance of the game started after Johnson went
up in the end zone in double coverage and caught a beautiful pass by QB David
Carr for a touchdown. Some thought the momentum would slip away after the half
like it had so many times before but the Texans showed they had heart and
determination to finish off the game.
Mario Williams had another good game following his 5
tackles and 1 assist against Dallas in the previous week. He walked away with
one sack and a fumble recovery on the day. Rookie RB Wali Lundy had a great game
with his first rushing touchdown and the first on the season for the Texans
offense. Lundy racked up 93 yards on 19 carries which comes out to a whopping
4.9 yards per carry. This type of running game is what the Texans have been
longing for. The secret now is to keep it up so the offense can keep firing on
all cylinders and the defense can stay off the field.
The Texans overall had a great game against the Jags. It
was almost “textbook-like” in that they dominated in all aspects of the game.
The Texans are showing their fans for the first time this year they can compete
with good NFL teams and win. This gives us as fans hope they can go out there
and do it again.
Next up: Vince Young and the Titans
