Injured receiver Andre Johnson participated in most of the drills during Thursday's practice despite suffering from a bruised lung that caused him to cough up blood during the victory over San Francisco.

Johnson, who has 38 catches for 634 yards and four touchdowns, is vital to the passing attack engineered by Matt Schaub.

"I'm very encouraged," coach Gary Kubiak said about Johnson. "He took pretty close to almost all the reps he normally takes and didn't seem to have any problem. We'll see how he feels."

Johnson said he's not feeling any pain and plans to play. The Texans provided Johnson with three choices of extra padding to avoid a direct hit on the same spot. The padding attaches to his shoulder pads.

"I've added something to my shoulder pads," Johnson said. "I'll use it if it's going to protect me. I'm pretty sure in a few weeks, it'll heal up, and I won't have to wear the stuff anymore.

"It doesn't affect me. Of course, I haven't played in anything like that since I played Little League, so it's been a long time. I don't think it will restrain me in any way. I think it's something I definitely have to get used to a little bit, but I don't think it will restrain me."

Johnson said he's made a lot of improvement since Sunday when he had trouble breathing.

"It feels good," he said. "Like I said, I wasn't in any pain or anything like that, so that's what made me feel that I would be out there (at Buffalo). My breathing is fine when I'm out there running. I feel normal. I'm ready to go."

If Johnson suffers a setback, Andre Davis would replace him in the lineup opposite Kevin Walter.
