Rex Ryan, Jets smart to sign Ed Reed

The New York Jets signed free agent safety Ed Reed on Thursday to add leadership to a talented but unproven secondary.

There's no secret that Rex Ryan is Ed Reed's biggest fan and now the long-time Baltimore Raven safety is reuniting with his former defensive coordinator now head coach in New York.

After reaching the pinnacle of the football world with the Ravens last year, Reed signed with the Houston Texans this offseason, but the team collapsed and his playing time diminished and the veteran safety found himself on the open market this week.

Ryan was quick to snatch up Reed, a player he referred to as "The greatest NFL safety of all-time," and the Jets' coach is hoping one of the game's top playmakers can impart knowledge onto a young and unproven secondary that has struggled to develop consistency this season.

While Reed's Pro Bowl days may be in the rearview, his ball hawking skills and understanding of the game proved invaluable for a Jets' squad looking to contend for the postseason this year.

It's unclear whether Reed will start alongside former Baltimore teammate Dawan Landry or fall in behind incumbent starter Antonio Allen on the depth chart, but his intangibles and leadership were evidently too good for the Jets to pass up.
