Opportunity Knocks for Akeem Dent

Opportunity Knocks for Akeem Dent

Akeem Dent was on his way out from the Atlanta Falcons until the Houston Texans pulled off a trade for him to improve their ILB group.

His time was up with the Atlanta Falcons and Akeem Dent was not in the plans when the Houston Texans traded for the former third round pick out of Georgia. With a late start in arriving to Houston, Dent has taken everything in stride,

“Everything has been good so far.” Dent said, “This is a new start and new opportunity.”

There seemed to be no ill feelings towards his former team and he sees this as a fresh start to make his new team, Dent went on to say, “It was just a trade. It happened and I am here now.”

He is behind the rest of his teammates with learning the playbook and Dent realizes the work that needs to be put into getting caught up. “I am just trying to get in and be a student of the game.” and he has leaned on his position group and Linebacker Coach Mike Vrabel for help.

“All of the linebackers have (helped) and of course Coach (Mike) Vrabel does a good job of communicating well.” He expanded on Vrabel and his coaching style, ““He is an intense guy and real exciting guy and I am glad to see that.”

Dent has also come into a situation in Houston that has plenty of former teammates on the team with former Falcons Tyson Clabo, Lawrence Sidbury and former Georgia Bulldog teammate Ben Jones. His comfort level with the Texans is evident, “It’s good just seeing a lot of guys that you know with other teams and playing ball with them in different places," but that doesn’t change what he knows needs to be done with the team. “We’re here and now it is time to go to work.”

Dent being added to the Texans have added some depth for an inside linebacker group that is dealing with a recovering Brian Cushing and some younger and inexperienced players on the depth chart.

The goal is still the same and Dent is taking nothing for granted as training camp starts,

“Right now there is nothing etched in stone so I just have to go in and work my tail off to make this team.”
