Texans Plans for Anthony Hill
"This is the situation I really hoped for," Hill said. "Just to have a chance. I feel so many times you come into a system but don't really have a chance to see the field except maybe on special teams. I feel like I'm going to get a chance, and all I have to do is show up and prove to them I can handle it. I feel like I'm really going to get a chance to show them what I can do."
Hill, who was arguably the best blocking tight end in the draft, could fit very well into the Texans' scheme. They like to play two-tight end sets with Owen Daniels as their versatile No. 1 tight end.
Daniels plays a major role in the passing game, whereas Bruener was primarily a blocker with the team. The Texans have already told Hill he will get involved in the offense as a receiving option and that he won't be a one-dimensional player. But at the same time, they will lean heavily on his ability to block as they try to make major strides in their running game.
"We just thought you always need a versatile tight end," tight ends coach Brian Pariani said. "And Anthony is primarily a run blocker, but he can run out and catch a pass and also run the ball."
Hill is ready to start learning the playbook and also getting to know his teammates. The one he is familiar with is Mario Williams, who he used to line up against in practice during college. He looks forward to seeing the familiar face, even if it means he has to block Williams on a daily basis again.
"Had I gone to Denver or a different team, I'd really have had to make new friends," Hill said. "And I'll still be making new friends, but I'll know somebody who has been there, and who has been through it all. And I can trust that he'll kind of help show me the way so that I don't make maybe the same mistakes he might have. Because you know they don't want you make the same mistakes they did."
